- Biographical Description
- Roda was a Black girl born around 1804. She was the daughter of Hager, and she had two younger siblings named Augustus and Mary. In 1818, when Roda was about 14 years old, her family became victims of the Van Wickle slave trading ring, and they were trafficked from Middlesex County, New Jersey, to Louisiana. Removal certificates issued in Middlesex County said that Roda was to go to Louisiana together with her mother and two siblings. Roda's family left New Jersey on the brig Mary Ann on March 10, 1818. However, when the brig Mary Ann arrived in New Orleans, Louisiana, it appears that Roda was missing. The list of Black people who disembarked from the Mary Ann in New Orleans includes Roda's mother and two siblings, but Roda's name is not on the list. What happened to Roda after the family left New Jersey is uncertain.
