Joseph was born in May 1818. His mother, Nancy was an enslaved woman aged 22 at the time of his birth. Under New Jersey's gradual abolition law, Joseph had the status of a slave for a term of 25 years. This meant he was bound to serve his enslaver until age 25, and then he would become eligible for emancipation.
However, Joseph was robbed of the freedom promised to him under New Jersey's gradual abolition law when he and his mother became victims of Jacob Van Wickle's slave trading ring mere days after Joseph's birth. Joseph was the youngest victim of the slave trading ring. A removal certificate authorizing an enslaver named David F. Labaw to remove Nancy and her 2-day-old baby boy from Middlesex County, New Jersey, to Pointe Coupee, Louisiana, was issued on May 21, 1818. The infant's name was not recorded on the removal certificate. Researchers with the Lost Souls Memorial Project have identified him as Joseph based on other documentation related to the Van Wickle slave trading ring.
On May 25, 1818, Nancy and Joseph were taken aboard the sloop Thorn bound for New Orleans. - Keywords
