- Biographical Description
- Charles was one of the victims of Jacob Van Wickle's slave trading ring in Middlesex County, New Jersey, in 1818. He was born in New Jersey to an enslaved mother named Phillis around 1816-10. Under New Jersey's gradual abolition law, he had the status of a slave for a term of 25 years. This meant he was bound to serve his enslaver until age 25, and then he would become eligible for emancipation. However, when he was 1 year 6 months years old, his mother Phillis was forced to leave New Jersey for Louisiana together with Charles, effectively depriving Charles of his right to freedom at age 25.
