- Biographical Description
- Jacob was one of the victims of Jacob Van Wickle's slave trading ring in Middlesex County, New Jersey, in 1818. He was born in New Jersey to an enslaved mother named Silvey around October 1816. Under New Jersey's gradual abolition law, he had the status of a slave for a term of 25 years. This meant he was bound to serve his enslaver until age 25, and then he would become eligible for emancipation. However, when he was only 18 months old, his mother Silvey was forced to leave New Jersey for Louisiana together with Jacob, effectively depriving Jacob of his right to freedom at age 25.
