- Biographical Description
-
Aaron Hassert was an enslaver who lived in Middlesex County, New Jersey. For much of his life, he was associated with the City of New Brunswick and the Township of North Brunswick.
He also served as the Collector of Perth Amboy from June 12, 1812, to March 31, 1818. In his job as the collector, he was supposed to inspect vessels at the port, collect customs and taxes, and enforce laws that restricted slave trading. In June 1818, he provided testimony to the grand jury in a criminal case related to the Van Wickle slave trading ring that was trafficking Black people out of Perth Amboy to Louisiana. - Keywords
