Rachel was a Black woman born circa 1790. She was enslaved by William Manning of Piscataway, NJ. William Manning’s will, written on September 23, 1814, three days before his death, stipulated that Rachel should stay with his wife Anna Manning until Rachel reached age 25. At age 25, Rachel was to be liberated. Additionally, William Manning provided $50 for Rachel in his will.
Rachel was aged 24 when William Manning died. Rather than waiting until Rachel turned 25 as stipulated in the will, Manning’s widow Anna Manning proceeded to manumit Rachel at once. Rachel became a free woman on October 15, 1814.
