Nell was a Black woman who was enslaved by William Manning of Piscataway, NJ. Her enslaver William Manning died on September 26, 1814. William Manning’s will, written on September 23, 1814, three days before his death, stipulated that Nell should stay with his wife Anna Manning, and that after Anna's death Nell would live with nephew William T. Manning. The will stipulated that Nell should be manumitted when she reached age 25.
See the Will of William Manning for a listing of other enslaved people in the household, some of whom were likely related to Nell.

Nell's date of birth is uncertain, but based on the details mentioned in William Manning's 1814 will (which refers to Nell as a "girl"), it can be inferred that Nell was born sometime between approximately 1790 and 1803. Manning's will stipulated that Nell should be manumitted upon reaching age 25. Thus we can infer that Nell was less than 25 years old in 1814. Evidently, Nell was not eligible for automatic emancipation at age 21 under the provisions of the Gradual Abolition Act which went into effect on July 4, 1804. Thus we can infer that Nell was born before the act went into effect. - Keywords
