Harry was a young boy who was enslaved by William Manning of Piscataway, NJ. William Manning’s will, written on September 23, 1814, three days before his death, mentioned "the little boy, Harry" and noted that he should be liberated when he reached age 25. Harry's date of birth is uncertain. Since Manning's will referred to him as a "little boy," it appears likely that Harry was under age 10 at that time in 1814. He was probably born after July 4, 1804, and thus was eligible for freedom at age 25 under the provisions of New Jersey's Gradual Abolition Act of 1804.
See the will of William Manning for a listing of the enslaved people in the household, some of whom were likely related to Harry. He may have been the son of one of the women listed in the will. - Keywords
