Jacob (Jake) was a Black man born circa 1792. He was enslaved by William Manning of Piscataway, NJ. William Manning’s will, written on September 23, 1814, three days before his death, mentioned "negro boy" Jake and stipulated that he should be liberated on May 1, 1818, and to receive $100 when freed.
Jacob was about 22 when William Manning died. Rather than waiting until 1818 as stipulated in the will, the heirs and executors of Manning's will proceeded to manumit Jacob at once. Jacob became a free man on October 15, 1814.
See the Will of William Manning for a listing of other enslaved people in the household, some of whom were likely related to Jacob. - Keywords
