Hetty was a Black woman who was enslaved by William Manning of Piscataway, NJ. William Manning’s will, written on September 23, 1814, three days before his death, stipulated that Hetty should be liberated when she reached age 25. Additionally, William Manning provided $50 for Hetty in his will.
It appears that Hetty was one of the four people who were manumitted by William Manning's heirs on October 15, 1814, soon after Manning's death. There was a manumission certificate recorded by the Middlesex County Clerk that probably belonged to Hetty. See the related manumission event for more details about this unusual manumission certificate.
See the will of William Manning for a listing of other enslaved people in the household, some of whom were likely related to Hetty. - Keywords
