- Nancy was born in 1817, the child of Hannah (enslaved by Edward T. Stelle of Middlesex County, NJ). Under the provisions of New Jersey's Gradual Abolition Act of 1804, she was considered a slave for a term of 21 years and would become eligible for emancipation upon reaching that age.
