- Ellen was born in 1835, the child of Jude (enslaved by Simon Van Dyke of South Brunswick, NJ). Under the provisions of New Jersey's Gradual Abolition Act of 1804, she was considered a slave for a term of 21 years and would become eligible for emancipation upon reaching that age.
