Charlotte Titus was born in 1805, the child of Sarah TenBroeck and Thomas Titus (enslaved by Gerardus Beekman of South Brunswick, NJ). Under the provisions of New Jersey's Gradual Abolition Act of 1804, she was considered a slave for a term of 21 years and would become eligible for emancipation upon reaching that age in 1826.
Charlotte was mentioned in Gerardus Beekman's will, which noted that Charlotte should serve Beekman's widow Jane Beekman until Charlotte became eligible for emancipation under the law.
Charlotte's father Thomas Titus eventually gained freedom after many years of laboring in the Beekman household and purchased a farm for his family. See the related record for the Titus Farm, where a historical marker has been erected to preserve the memory of the Titus family. Charlotte kept the farm in the family after her father's death in 1849. - Keywords
