- Event Description
-
In August 1817, Thomas Titus, together with his wife Sarah TenBroeck Titus, purchased a small farm from Ferdinand Van Dyke for $50. Thomas was approximately 32 years old at this time. The Titus family would go on to farm this land for decades. They had been formerly enslaved by Gerardus Beekman. The farm was purchased during a transitional period when Thomas was establishing a free household. (Beekman had agreed to manumit Thomas on March 1, 1817, but the official manumission certificate was not issued until April 13, 1818.)
See the related record for the Titus Farm, where a historical marker has been erected to preserve the memory of the Titus family. - Event Type
