- A man of African descent was enslaved by John Trimmer of Dutch Valley (present-day Long Valley) in Morris County, New Jersey. The man ran away from Trimmer in 1798. He was described as a "Mulatto Man" in a runaway notice published by Trimmer, but his name was not listed. His fate after leaving Trimmer's household is uncertain.
