Biographical Description
John was a Black boy born circa 1783. He was enslaved by a man named Mr. Reausseau, who came to New York from Jérémie, Saint-Domingue (preset-day Haiti). John spoke French and probably had spent time in Saint-Domingue with Reausseau. In 1799, he ran away from his enslaver in New York. He was caught and jailed in Trenton.
