- Mariann (or Mary Ann) was an enslaved woman, born in March 1797, who was enslaved by James Edgar (1748-1815) of Woodbridge, NJ. James Edgar mentioned her in his will, written in December 1814, shortly before Edgar died. He instructed that Mariann should serve his widow Mary Edgar until Mariann turned 21 years old, when she should be set free. On October 3, 1818, Samuel Edgar, the son of James Edgar and one of the executors of his will, signed a deed of manumission for Mariann, granting her freedom.
