Hannah Allen was a Black woman who resided in or around North Brunswick, Middlesex County, New Jersey. Her exact date and place of birth is uncertain. Information about her life comes from her manumission documents, written in 1822 when she was an adult.
Hannah was the daughter of Sarah Ball. Hannah's mother was enslaved at the time of Hannah's birth, and thus Hannah was born into slavery. Sometime after giving birth to Hannah, Sarah Ball gained freedom and then purchased Hannah from her former enslaver. The former enslaver's name is not noted in the documents from 1822. On February 19, 1822, Sarah Ball completed the legal process required to officially manumit Hannah, obtaining a certificate of manumission from county officials and executing a deed of manumission. We can assume that Hannah lived much as a free person for a long time before 1822, since her mother mentioned that she purchased Hannah a long time ago (though the date of the purchase is not specified). The documents also mention that Hannah was married to a free man of color named John Allen, thus Hannah Allen was her married name. - Keywords
