Biographical Description
Lewis was an enslaved man, born around 1786. He was manumitted and set free in 1817 in South Amboy, NJ, when he was 31 years old. Two different enslavers were named in the documents manumitting Lewis: Obadiah Burlew and Joseph Cottrell, both of South Amboy. The relationship between the two enslavers is unclear, making it difficult to ascertain where Lewis lived and worked prior to his manumission.

For details about Lewis's manumission, see the related manumission event in 1817.
