- Biographical Description
- Peter Lewe (also referred to as Peter Manning) was a Black man who lived in Woodbridge, NJ, in the early 19th century. He was enslaved by Jeremiah Manning (1736-1803). Jeremiah Manning promised to manumit Peter Lewe and a woman named Dianna Lewe (whose exact relationship to Peter is uncertain). While Dianna Lewe was officially manumitted in 1801, Peter was not manumitted before the death of Jeremiah Manning in 1803. Decades later, on January 25, 1820, William Ford Manning, the son and administrator of the estate of Jeremiah Manning fulfilled his father's promise and manumitted Peter Lewe.
