Joseph (Joe) was a Black man, born around 1787, who was enslaved by Robert Mershon of South Brunswick, NJ. Mershon's will stipulated that Joseph should be manumitted if he served faithfully for a 10-year term from January 1812 (i.e. until the end of 1821).
Hannah Mershon, the widow and executrix of Robert Mershon's estate, manumitted Joseph in October 1819, about two years before the expiration of the term outlined in Robert Mershon's will. Joseph was aged 32 at the time of manumission. - Keywords
