- Biographical Description
- Sarah was an enslaved woman who lived in New Jersey in the early 19th century and was manumitted by Garret Voorhees of South Amboy, NJ. The certificate of manumission was issued on September 4, 1823. The deed of manumission was executed on the same day and stated that Sarah was "of the age of twenty [blank] years or thereabouts," leaving a blank space after the word twenty. It can be inferred that Sarah was probably between the ages of 21 and 29 at the time of her manumission (21 was the minimum age required for the manumission process), and that she was born sometime circa 1794 to 1802.
