- Event Description
-
Saul Edgar, aged 31, was manumitted by Peter Edgar and David Edgar, the sons and executors of the last will and testament of Thomas Edgar of Woodbridge, Middlesex County, New Jersey. The executors brought Saul Edgar to court to obtain a certificate of manumission. The certificate of manumission was signed by the Overseers of the Poor of Woodbridge (Joseph Crowell and Richard Cutter) and Justices of the Peace for Middlesex County (Ichabod Potter and Ephraim Harriot) on November 28, 1818. The document stated that Saul Edgar was examined in court and met the eligibility requirements for manumission in New Jersey, i.e. the person was 21 to 40 years old and was "sound in mind and not under any bodily incapacity" of obtaining a livelihood. The deed of manumission was signed on November 28, 1818, by Peter Edgar and David Edgar. These documents were recorded by the Middlesex County Clerk (William P. Deare) on December 5, 1818.
The abstract of the will of Thomas Edgar (published in the Calendar of Wills, Vol. 12, 1810–1813) does not mention Saul Edgar. - Event Type
