Manumission of Richard Barkelew (certificate dated 1817-07-29, deed dated 1817-07-29), recorded in Manumissions and Removals Book, p. 200-201. Middlesex County (N.J.) Records, 1688-1929, Vol. XI (MC 784.1). Special Collections and University Archives, Rutgers University Libraries.
- Event Description
-
Richard Barkelew (or Buckelew), aged 25, was manumitted by Abraham S. Barkelew of the township of North Brunswick, Middlesex County, New Jersey. Abraham S. Barkelew's family is associated with the area of North Brunswick township known today as South River, and this manumission probably took place there.
The certificate of manumission, which spells the last name of Richard and his enslaver as Barkelew, was signed by the Overseer of the Poor of North Brunswick (Abraham Van Arsdalen) and Justices of the Peace for Middlesex County (Samuel Willet and Jacob Van Wickle) on July 29, 1817. The document stated that Richard Barkelew was examined in court and met the eligibility requirements for manumission in New Jersey, i.e. the person was 21 to 40 years old and was "sound in mind and not under any bodily incapacity" of obtaining a livelihood.
The deed of manumission, which spells the last name of Richard and his enslaver as Buckelew, was signed by the enslaver on July 29, 1817.
These documents were recorded by the Middlesex County Clerk (William P. Deare) on July 29 and July 30, 1817. - Event Type
