Manumission of Phebe (certificate dated 1814-04-19, deed dated 1814-04-19), recorded in Manumissions and Removals Book, p. 152, 325-326. Middlesex County (N.J.) Records, 1688-1929, Vol. XI (MC 784.1). Special Collections and University Archives, Rutgers University Libraries.
- Event Description
-
Phebe, aged 26, was manumitted by Reuben Drake of Piscataway, Middlesex County, New Jersey. The certificate of manumission was signed by the Overseers of the Poor of Piscataway (Samuel Stelle and Ephraim Runyon) and Justices of the Peace for Middlesex County (George Boice Jr. and John Fitz Randolph) on April 19, 1814. The document stated that Phebe was examined in court and met the eligibility requirements for manumission in New Jersey, i.e. the person was 21 to 40 years old and was "sound in mind and not under any bodily incapacity" of obtaining a livelihood. This document was recorded by the Middlesex County Clerk (William P. Deare) on September 21, 1814, on p. 152.
Additionally, Reuben Drake signed a deed of manumission on April 19, 1814, in the presence of witnesses Amasa Flatt and David Clayton. Six years later, on July 31, 1820, Judge Benajah Mundy notarized the deed, and the county clerk recorded a copy of the deed on p. 325-326. - Event Type
