Manumission of Jack Demun (certificate dated 1819-06-19, deed dated 1819-06-19), recorded in Manumissions and Removals Book, p. 302-304. Middlesex County (N.J.) Records, 1688-1929, Vol. XI (MC 784.1). Special Collections and University Archives, Rutgers University Libraries.
- Event Description
- Jack Demun, aged 39, was manumitted by the last will and testament of Israel Thornal of Woodbridge, Middlesex County, New Jersey, who died in May 1819. The executors of Israel Thornal's estate (Lewis Thornal and Manning Thornal) brought Jack Demun to court to complete the process and obtain a certificate of manumission. The certificate of manumission was signed by the Overseers of the Poor of Woodbridge (Joseph Crowell and Richard Cutter) and Justices of the Peace for Middlesex County (Ichabod Potter and Josiah Ford) on June 19, 1819. The document stated that Jack Demun was examined in court and met the eligibility requirements for manumission in New Jersey, i.e. the person was 21 to 40 years old and was "sound in mind and not under any bodily incapacity" of obtaining a livelihood. The deed of manumission was signed on June 19, 1819, by Lewis Thornal and Manning Thornal in the presence of witnesses Reuben M. Mundy and Joseph Crowell. These documents were recorded by the Middlesex County Clerk (William P. Deare) on July 1, 1819.
