Manumission of Jack (deed dated 1814-09-14), recorded in Manumissions and Removals Book, p. 153. Middlesex County (N.J.) Records, 1688-1929, Vol. XI (MC 784.1). Special Collections and University Archives, Rutgers University Libraries.
- Event Description
-
A Black man named Jack was manumitted by Samuel Cox of Middlesex County, New Jersey. The deed of manumission was executed on September 14, 1814, by Samuel Cox, in the presence of witnesses Luke Whitlock and Asher Applegate. Judge Asa Runyon notarized the deed on October 14, 1814, and Middlesex County Clerk William P. Deare recorded a copy of the document in his book on October 14, 1814. However, a certificate of manumission for Jack, which would customarily be issued by county officials as part of the manumission process, was not recorded by the clerk.
The enslaver's place of residence within Middlesex County was not recorded on the deed, so the location of this event is uncertain. The location could be in North Brunswick Township considering the fact that the deed was notarized by Judge Asa Runyon who primarily worked in North Brunswick. - Event Type
