Jef was a Black man born around 1773. He was enslaved by a Mr. Mattison of Princeton, New Jersey. Letters found in the Neilson Family Papers at Rutgers Special Collections and University Archives provide some information about Jef's life circa 1794 when he was 21 years old. According to this correspondence, Mr. Mattison planned to sell Jef, and Col. John Neilson wanted to buy him and take him to New Brunswick. Whether this sale was ever finalized is uncertain. The letters also mention that at some earlier point in time, Jef was sold to one Mr. Kelsey, but was was "taken back" to the Mattison household at the request of Mr. Mattison's wife.
