Doctor Thomas Read was the son of the Rev. Israel Read. He grew up in the 18th century in Bound Brook, NJ, where his father was the pastor of the Presbyterian Church for many years. He and his brother Archibald inherited a man named Tony from the pastor's estate and sold Tony several years later in 1798. By this time, Thomas Read was a physician living in Montgomery County in upstate New York. The sale took place in New Brunswick, NJ.
