- Biographical Description
- Hannah (or Hanna) was a Black woman who was enslaved by Jacob Van Dike (1723-1809) of Ten Mile Run (at the border of South Brunswick, Middlesex County, and Franklin Township, Somerset County) in the early 19th century. See Jacob Van Dike's will for information about Hannah and a man named James who were both given "the liberty of choosing their own masters" and who may have been related. After the elder Jacob Van Dike's death in 1809, Hannah went to live with his nephew, also named Jacob Van Dike (1754-1827). By 1812, she was living in West Windsor with the younger Jacob. She gave birth to at least 3 children while serving the Van Dike family, with birth certificates for Rachel, Bristor, and Democrat filed in Middlesex County.
