- Joseph was born in 1808, the child of Nanny (or Nancy). Joseph and his mother were enslaved by James Parker Jr. of Perth Amboy, NJ. Under the provisions of New Jersey's Gradual Abolition Act of 1804, Joseph was considered a slave for a term of 25 years and would become eligible for emancipation upon reaching that age.
