- Daphne was born in 1820, the child of Bett (enslaved by Andrew Bell of Perth Amboy, NJ). Under the provisions of New Jersey's Gradual Abolition Act of 1804, she was considered a slave for a term of 21 years and would become eligible for emancipation upon reaching that age.
