- Biographical Description
- Charles was born in 1809, the child of Jane (enslaved by Thomas Blackwell of Mapletown, NJ). Under the provisions of New Jersey's Gradual Abolition Act of 1804, he was considered a slave for a term of 25 years and would become eligible for emancipation upon reaching that age. It appears that after the death of his original enslaver in 1825, Charles was enslaved by Thomas's son Austin Davis Thomas.
