James was a Black man enslaved by a wealthy Middlesex County farmer named Jacob Van Dike (1723-1809) for a term of years. This means that James was supposed to gain freedom at the expiration of some agreed-upon term. Van Dike mentioned James in his will written in 1803; the will prohibited his executors from selling James at a public auction and allowed James the right to "choose his own master" until the end of his term of service.
James lived with Jacob Van Dike around the area of Ten Mile Run. - Keywords
