- Biographical Description
- Peter Baumfree (or Bomefree) was the younger brother of the famed abolitionist Sojourner Truth and is discussed briefly in her autobiographical book. He was born around the turn of the 19th century in Ulster County in the area of Hurley and was enslaved by Charles Hardenbergh (1765-1808). Peter was the only brother that Sojourner Truth remembered from her childhood because all of her parents' older children were sold before Sojourner Truth was born (or before she was old enough to remember them). After Charles Hardenbergh's death in 1808, Sojourner Truth and her brother Peter were sold at auction. They were both under the age of ten at that time.
