- Biographical Description
- Sam was a man enslaved in the household of Charles Hardenbergh (1765-1808), in the early 19th century. He lived in the area of Hurley, Ulster County, New York, together with the famed abolitionist Sojourner Truth when she was a child in Hardenbergh's home. Sam's name appears in the inventory of Hardenbergh's estate in 1808, above Isabella (which was Sojourner Truth's original name). Beyond the inventory document, his fate and his relationship to Sojourner Truth is uncertain.
