Sussex County Births of Enslaved Children microfilm contains a birth record for Harriet, daughter of Betty, born in 1823. Under New Jersey's gradual abolition law, Harriet had the status of a slave for a term of 21 years. This meant she was bound to serve her enslaver until age 21, and then she would become eligible for emancipation in 1844. Harriet and her mother were enslaved by Nathan A. Shafer, one of the operators of the Shafer Grist Mill in Stillwater (Nathan and his brothers inherited the mill business from their father Abraham).
Harriet's father was probably a man named Nun, who was also enslaved by the Shafer family. Nun is known to be the father of Harriet's older brother Robert. - Keywords
