Nathan Armstrong Shafer was an enslaver who resided in Stillwater, Sussex County, New Jersey
He was the son of Abraham Shaver (or Shafer) and Sarah Armstrong. His father was the owner of an industrial mill operation known as the Casper and Abraham Shafer Grist Mill Complex in Stillwater (which is on the National Register of Historic Places). Up to a dozen enslaved people worked on the property in the early 19th century, including both industrial laborers and domestic servants. Nathan and his brothers inherited the mill business — and the enslaved laborers — when Abraham died in 1820. - Keywords
