- Edward Cook was a Black man who lived in Sussex County, New Jersey, in the early 19th century. He was married to a Black woman named Amy, who was enslaved by J. D. Austin. Amy and Edward had at least two children, Rosannah and Mary. On Rosannah's birth certificate, filed with the Sussex County Clerk, J. D. Austin referred to Rosannah's father as "Dr. Edward Cook a negro." His freedom status is uncertain from the records, and he may have been a free man who practiced medicine.
