- Biographical Description
-
Dr. Elijah Everitt (or Everett) was an enslaver who lived around the area of Hardwick Township (present-day Warren County) and Green Township (Sussex County) in the early 19th century (this area was originally all part of Hardwick, but split into separate townships in 1824).
He was married to Martha Gaston, daughter of Joseph Gaston and Margaret Linn. When his father-in-law died in 1804, Elijah Everitt and his wife Martha inherited a mill property in Huntsville (a hamlet in present-day Green Township). It appears Elijah Everitt also came into possession of an enslaved man named York (also called John Smack) from Joseph Gaston's estate. - Keywords
