- Event Description
-
Sussex County Births of Enslaved Children microfilm contains the following record:
Child: Marten
Mother: Jin
Enslaver of mother and child at the time of birth: Thomas VnKirk
Location: Sussex County
Birth date: 8 Nov 1818
Recorded date: 13 March 1819
Clerk: Greene
The birth certificate indicates that the boy and his mother were originally enslaved by Thomas VanKirk and were then sold to Job S. Halsted of Newton on March 1, 1819. The place of birth of the child is not specified on the birth certificate, but since Thomas VanKirk was known to be a resident of Hardyston, it appears likely that the child was born in that township. - Event Type
