- Biographical Description
- Mars Willson was a Black man born circa 1773. He was enslaved by Isabella Kearney. In the early 19th century, he lived with Isabella in Hanover, Morris County, New Jersey, at a place called Irish Lot, which was the home of Isabella's brother Michael Kearney. Prior to living with her brother in Hanover, Isabella Kearney lived for many years in Monmouth County where she had a farm in the area of present-day Farmingdale, and it is possible that Mars Willson also worked on that farm before relocating with Isabella to Morris County, but this has not been definitively confirmed, and it is uncertain how and when Mars Willson came into Isabella's household. Mars Willson and Isabella Kearney made an agreement that Mars would eventually be released from slavery, and Mars was manumitted when he was 33 years old, shortly after Isabella's death.
