- Biographical Description
- Martha was a Black girl born in 1805, the daughter of Susan, enslaved by Michael Garrish of Piscataway. Under New Jersey's gradual abolition law, she had the status of a slave for a term of 21 years. This meant she was bound to serve her enslaver until age 21, and then she would become eligible for emancipation. Her enslaver Michael Garrish filed an abandonment certificate for Martha in 1806, giving her up to the Overseers of the Poor of Piscataway.
