Certificate of Abandonment for Elizabeth's daughter Dinah, by William Lupardus
-
Certificate of Abandonment for Elizabeth's daughter Dinah, by William Lupardus, December 6, 1805. Archival location: Special Collections and University Archives, Rutgers University Libraries. Piscataway Township Records, 1682–1954 (MC 1359). Folder: Certificates of abandonment for negro children born of slave parents, 1805-1807, Ac. 1635 (physical location: BL drawer on-site at Alexander Library).
- Event Description
-
The Following Abandonment Certificate was submitted to the Overseer of the Poor of the Township of Piscataway:
Child: listed as "Elizabeth or otherwise Bet" [appears to be an error, should say Dinah]
Mother: Bet
Enslaver of Mother and Child: William Lupardus
Abandonment Certificate Date: December 6, 1805
Child’s Date of Birth: December 26, 1804
Note that there is a discrepancy between this abandonment certificate and the birth certificate that was filed earlier for this baby girl, the daughter of Bet. The birth certificate states that the mother's name is "Elizabeth otherwise called Bett", and the daughter born on December 26, 1804, is named Dinah. The abandonment certificate filed in December 1805, when the child was near one years old, states "My Negro Woman named Bet lay in with a female child on the 26th day of December last which child she called Elizabeth or otherwise Bet." Since the date of birth matches exactly, we can infer that these two documents refer to the same child. Most likely, the person who wrote out the abandonment certificate made a mistake and erroneously wrote in the mother's name (Elizabeth or Bet) in place of the child's (Dinah). The abandonment certificate was likely penned by the Overseer of the Poor himself. The text of the certificate is written in a different hand than William Lupardus's signature.
This certificate indicates that the enslaver abandoned all his legal rights and title to the child and gave up the child to the Overseer of the Poor to be bound out as a pauper. - Event Type
