The Following Abandonment Certificate was submitted to the Overseer of the Poor of the Township of Piscataway:
Child: Sarah
Mother: Jude
Enslaver of Mother and Child: Mary Boice
Abandonment Certificate Date: June 6, 1806
Child's Date of Birth as recorded on the abandonment certificate: November 16, 1805
Note that there is a discrepancy in the way Sarah's birthday was recorded. Her birthday, as reported on her original birth certificate, was November 13, 1805.
This abandonment certificate indicates that the enslaver abandoned all her legal rights and title to the child and gave up the child to the Overseer of the Poor to be bound out as a pauper.
The following is a transcript of the certificate:
"To the Town Clerk & overseer of the poor of the township of Piscataway
Gentlemen these are to inform you that my Negro wench Jude was brought to bed the sixteenth day of November last with a female child which she named Sarah—I do therefore hereby give you notice that I do abandon all my right & title to the said female child agreeably to an Act of the Legislature in such case made & provided – Given under my hand the 6th day of June 1806.
