Princeton Theological Seminary was founded by the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in 1812. Its goal was to provide specialized postgraduate education for Presbyterian church leaders. The Seminary was strategically located in Princeton because the town was the site of the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University), the oldest Presbyterian institution of higher learning in the United States. The Seminary was separate from the College, but the two institutions enjoyed a close cooperative relationship. Many graduates of the College of New Jersey continued their education at the Seminary.
In October 2018, Princeton Theological Seminary published a report about the institution's historical ties to slavery. Additionally, primary sources and stories related to some affiliates of the Seminary are featured on the Princeton & Slavery Project website produced by Princeton University. - Organization Place
