- Biographical Description
- Mary was a Black woman born circa 1773. She was enslaved by John Carter of Rocky Hill and later by Francis Blaise of Princeton. For some time, she lived with a French family and learned to speak a little French. She ran away from Francis Blaise in December 1793 and was seen near her former home in Rocky Hill and in the area of Sourland Mountain after she escaped. She was absent from Blaise's household until at least July 1795, when Blaise (who by then moved to New Brunswick) published a notice explaining that Mary had been gone for over a year. Blaise offered to sell Mary to a person of her choice if she would return.
