- Biographical Description
- Costant (or possibly Constant) was a Black man born circa 1748. He was enslaved by John Williams Sanders of Princeton, NJ. He labored as a domestic servant and enjoyed playing the fiddle. He escaped from his enslaver in 1774, and Sanders published a runaway advertisement suggesting that Costant was trying to find a way on board a ship to the West Indies. It is possible that Costant was from the West Indies and was searching for a way home.
