- Biographical Description
- Isaac Coats was an enslaver who lived in Philadelphia during the Revolutionary Era. He resided on Vine Street in the 1770s. He was a brickmaker. One of the people he enslaved was a young chimney sweep named Silas (called Sy for short), who ran away to New Jersey multiple times in the early 1770s. Coats submitted at least 7 separate runaway advertisements for Silas to the Pennsylvania Journal newspaper between 1764 and 1772.
