Samuel S. Forman (1765-1862) was a white man from Middletown Point (now Matawan), Monmouth County, New Jersey, the son of Samuel Forman (1713-1792) and Helena Denise Forman.
In 1789, he was one of the leaders of a convoy that transported over 60 enslaved Black people from Monmouth County, to Natchez, Mississippi, to work on a tobacco plantation there. The convoy was assembled by General David Forman (1745-1797), a wealthy enslaver who lived in the area of present-day Manalapan (then part of Freehold) and who sought to get into the tobacco growing business in the Mississippi territory together with his brother Ezekiel Forman (1736-1795) of Philadelphia. Samuel S. Forman wrote a memoir of the convoy's long journey from Monmouth County to Natchez, which was published in 1888 (years after his death) under the title Narrative of a Journey down the Ohio and Mississippi in 1789-90. In this memoir, he called David Forman and Ezekiel Forman his uncles, but they were technically his first cousins once removed (the first cousins of Samuel S. Forman's father). - Keywords
